The third The Last Of Us developer diary has been released this week and concentrates on death and the difficult choices Joel and Ellie must make in order to survive.
The Last of Us game exclusively for the PS3 will be launching on Jun 14th 2013, and is available to pre-order now. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.
Survival and Choices in The Last of Us
The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog explains a little more about their new game and what you can expect whilst playing:
“The Last of Us is genre-defining experience blending survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague. Cities are abandoned and being reclaimed by nature. Remaining survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a young teenage girl who’s braver and wiser beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.”
In this post-apocalyptic world, the game emphasizes the harsh realities of survival. Players must navigate through environments filled with both human and infected enemies. The scarcity of resources forces players to make tough decisions about when to fight and when to avoid confrontation. This dynamic creates a tense and immersive experience, as every encounter could be a matter of life or death.
Character Development and Emotional Depth
One of the standout features of The Last of Us is its focus on character development and emotional storytelling. Joel and Ellie are not just survivors; they are complex characters with their own backstories, motivations, and evolving relationship. As players progress through the game, they witness the bond between Joel and Ellie grow stronger, adding an emotional layer to the gameplay.
The game also explores themes of loss, hope, and the human condition. For example, Joel’s past is marked by tragedy, which influences his actions and decisions throughout the game. Ellie, on the other hand, represents a glimmer of hope in a world filled with despair. Their journey is not just about physical survival but also about finding meaning and connection in a broken world.
I have also dropped in the first two in the series just in case you missed them. Enjoy!
The game’s realistic graphics and detailed environments further enhance the storytelling. From the overgrown urban landscapes to the eerie, abandoned buildings, every setting in The Last of Us is meticulously crafted to immerse players in its world. The sound design, including the haunting musical score by Gustavo Santaolalla, adds to the overall atmosphere, making the game a truly cinematic experience.
In addition to the main storyline, The Last of Us offers various side quests and collectibles that provide deeper insights into the game’s world and characters. These elements encourage exploration and reward players with additional context and lore, enriching the overall narrative.
The Last of Us has received critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay, compelling story, and emotional depth. It has set a new standard for storytelling in video games, proving that the medium can deliver experiences that are both entertaining and thought-provoking.
