We have seen quite a few different geeky cakes here at Geeky Gadgets, and the latest one will appeal to all the Star Wars fans out there: the Star Wars R2-D2 Birthday Cake.
This fun R2-D2 cake was made by GoblinQueeen from deviantART for her friend’s birthday. It looks pretty cool, even though poor old R2-D2 has been decapitated.
The Craftsmanship Behind the Cake
The level of detail on this cake is truly impressive. GoblinQueeen used a variety of techniques and materials to bring R2-D2 to life in cake form. The metallic shine on the cake is achieved using edible glitter, which gives it that authentic droid look. The silver ‘eye’ pieces were sculpted out of marzipan and then covered with the same edible glitter to maintain consistency in the design.
The big box/lens on R2-D2’s body is actually a painted box, which was painted by her roommate, and it features a plastic painted package piece to make the lens. This level of collaboration and attention to detail really sets this cake apart from other themed cakes. The light on R2-D2 is a chopped-off ring from a party supply store, showcasing how everyday items can be creatively repurposed for cake decorating.
