The game that’s been rattling its lightsaber in World Of Warcraft’s direction for pretty much the entirety of its development is now promising to fix the single biggest flaw in MMO gameplay today.
And while I’m perfectly aware of Bioware performing miracles like actually making a good Sonic game which is also an RPG, which is sort of like making a new season of Heroes that’s not only good, but also The Sopranos, this off I very much doubt they can pull.
“We want them to group. We want them to deck out in their gear. We want them to experiment with builds. We want them to explore the nether regions of all the planets. We want to make really hard stuff for them. And we most assuredly want them to seek out challenges bigger than themselves,” according to Danny Schubert, Lead Combat Designer. Th people he’s talking about, that’s you. And he’s not done.
“But I would separate the idea of ‘challenge’ and ‘punishment’. I would rather our challenges be gated by whether or not you have the skill, the gear, and the teamwork to succeed than whether or not you have the credits and/or time to wait out the forced downtime in between, you know, the fun part.” Yeah, but the thing is you need credits to buy the gear and you need to grind to get the credits. “Ultimately, we want players to play the freakin’ game”, he concludes.
