Some of our readers will remember the Spring Design Alex eReader that was announced back in October of 2009. Good news if you have been waiting to get your hands on one, as the Alex eReader has now gone on sale in the US.
The Spring Design Alex is available to order for $399 from Spring Design, and you will be able to pre-order one later today and it will ship in the middle of April.
The Alex eReader is a dual screen device, it features a 6 inch E-Ink EPD display and a 3.5 inch color LCD display, and it runs on Google’s Android OS.
It measures 4.7 inches by 8.9 inches and is about half an inch thick, with a weight of about 11 ounces. The Alex eReader connects to Google’s bookstore and users have access to over one million books.
Features and Specifications
The dual-screen design of the Alex eReader is one of its most distinctive features. The 6-inch E-Ink display is perfect for reading eBooks, providing a paper-like experience that is easy on the eyes, even during extended reading sessions. The 3.5-inch color LCD display, on the other hand, is ideal for browsing the web, viewing multimedia content, and navigating through the device’s interface. This combination of screens allows users to enjoy the best of both worlds: the readability of E-Ink and the versatility of an LCD.
Running on Google’s Android OS, the Alex eReader offers a level of flexibility and functionality that is uncommon in many eReaders. Users can download and install a variety of Android applications, enhancing the device’s capabilities beyond just reading. The built-in web browser and WiFi connectivity further expand its utility, allowing users to access online content and stay connected on the go.
Connectivity and Content Access
One of the standout features of the Alex eReader is its seamless integration with Google’s bookstore. With access to over one million books, users are spoiled for choice when it comes to reading material. Whether you’re into fiction, non-fiction, academic texts, or magazines, the vast library ensures that there’s something for everyone.
In addition to the extensive book library, the Alex eReader supports various Google Android applications. This means that users can customize their eReader experience by installing apps that suit their needs, whether it’s for productivity, entertainment, or social networking. The built-in web browser is another significant advantage, enabling users to surf the internet, check emails, and stay updated with the latest news.
The device’s WiFi connection ensures that users can download books, apps, and other content directly to the eReader without needing to connect to a computer. This wireless capability makes the Alex eReader a truly portable and convenient device for modern readers.
It certainly does look like one of the more interesting e-readers that we have seen. Have a look and our article on Android vs iPhone to see which smartphone and mobile platform is best for you.
