We previously saw a teardown of the Galaxy S6 Edge by iFixit, and now it is the turn of the Samsung Galaxy S6.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with a 5.2 inch display, have a look at the photos below to see what was found inside the handset.
Teardown Insights and Repairability
The Galaxy S6 Edge only scored 3 out of 10 on the iFixit repair index, where 1 is the hardest to repair and 10 is the easiest to repair. This low score was primarily due to the challenging nature of accessing and replacing internal components, which were tightly packed and secured with strong adhesive.
In the latest teardown, the Samsung Galaxy S6 did slightly better than the S6 Edge and managed to score 4 out of 10. This marginally higher score indicates that while the Galaxy S6 is still difficult to repair, it is somewhat more accessible than its Edge counterpart.
Challenges in Repairing the Galaxy S6
As with the previous teardown, the front and back glass on the handset were difficult to repair and are fixed to the handset with strong adhesive. This means there is a significant risk of the display being damaged when the glass is repaired. The adhesive used is so strong that it requires careful application of heat and specialized tools to separate the glass from the frame without causing damage.
Additionally, the internal components of the Galaxy S6 are densely packed, making it challenging to access individual parts for repair or replacement. For example, the battery is not easily removable, as it is glued in place and requires the removal of the motherboard to access. This design choice complicates what would otherwise be a straightforward battery replacement.
Another point of difficulty is the use of proprietary screws and connectors, which necessitate specific tools that are not commonly found in a typical repair toolkit. This further adds to the complexity and cost of repairing the device.
Despite these challenges, the teardown revealed some positive aspects. For instance, the modular nature of certain components, such as the headphone jack and the USB port, means that these parts can be replaced independently without needing to replace the entire motherboard. This modularity can potentially reduce repair costs for specific issues.
The teardown also highlighted the high-quality construction and materials used in the Galaxy S6, which contribute to its premium feel and durability. However, these same qualities also make it more challenging to disassemble and repair.
