We’ve heard a rumor a couple of times in the past that Amazon is working on its own smartphone, which is expected to see the daylight under Kindle Fire brand. We don’t have any official word from the retail giant about the launch of its own smartphone. Now, citing sources familiar with Amazon’s plan, a new report from Jessica Lessin mentions that Amazon might offer its smartphone free of cost. However, there are no details of how Amazon is going to pull this thing offer. The report mentions that Amazon is talking to wireless carriers about offering its phone, yet it is highly likely that they will sell them through its website. There is a probability that Amazon might ask its users to sign up for Amazon Prime, but the report also mentions, “But the people familiar with the matter said that Amazon wants the device to be free whether or not people sign up for a new wireless plan at the same time.” Many carriers offer older smartphones at a lower cost, as low as $1, but the user has to sign up for a two-year contract with the carrier. It would be a difficult task for Amazon to pull of something like this as no carrier would be willing to offer a device free without any contract. There is no official news about this from Amazon, but we’ll keep an eye on the news if something pops up. What do you think about this new rumor? Can Amazon pull off something like this?
