After details reported that Pandora is planning to acquire the Rdio service, which is currently in the process of winding down and being restructured, the company has today announced that existing Rdio subscribers will have their accounts transferred to free accounts from November 23rd, 2015 onwards.
Transition to Free Accounts
Rdio explains more about the transition from subscription accounts to free accounts. This transition is part of the broader restructuring efforts as Pandora integrates Rdio’s technology and user base into its own platform. The move is designed to ensure that users experience minimal disruption during this period of change.
Effective Monday, November 23, if you currently have an Rdio subscription, it will be canceled on your next billing date, and you will no longer be automatically charged. Rest assured that your subscription will remain active for any period of time you’ve already been billed. Also starting November 23, Rdio will no longer take new subscriptions.
After your subscription ends, you can continue listening to Rdio Free (ad-supported stations on mobile or ad-supported, on-demand songs, albums, and playlists on the web) until the service goes offline. We’ll be in touch via email in the near future with more specifics, including the exact timing of Rdio’s end of service, as well as information on exporting your Rdio data, including your playlists and favorites.
Impact on Users
This transition will affect all current Rdio subscribers, who will need to adjust to the new ad-supported model. While this may be inconvenient for some, it also provides an opportunity for users to explore Pandora’s offerings. Pandora has stated that they are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible, and they will provide detailed instructions on how to export Rdio data, including playlists and favorites, to ensure that users do not lose their curated content.
For those unfamiliar with Pandora, it is a music streaming and internet radio service that offers both free and premium subscription options. The acquisition of Rdio is expected to enhance Pandora’s service by incorporating Rdio’s on-demand streaming capabilities, which will allow Pandora to compete more effectively with other major players in the music streaming industry, such as Spotify and Apple Music.
Additionally, Rdio users who have enjoyed the platform’s unique features, such as its user-friendly interface and extensive music library, may find similar or improved experiences with Pandora. Pandora’s Music Genome Project, which powers its recommendation engine, is one of the most sophisticated in the industry, offering personalized music suggestions based on users’ listening habits.
