Sony has unveiled this week that their new PS Vita games will be priced cheaper than the retail versions. Sony has revealed that any digital games purchased in the US or Japan PlayStation Stores to be downloaded, will come with a 10% discount over their retail versions. Showing that Sony has learnt their lesson with the PSP Go and that retailers are still not 100 percent ready to swap to digital games just yet.
The Best Buy listings were spotted by a NeoGAF user, with each game being offered at 10 per cent off the normal RRP. A Sony representative told ShackNews
“I can confirm that there will be a discount on the downloadable PS Vita titles from PSN. Exact details have not yet been revealed, but be on the lookout for an announcement in the very near future,”
Impact on the Gaming Market
This move by Sony is significant as it reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry towards digital distribution. By offering a 10% discount on digital downloads, Sony is not only making it more attractive for gamers to purchase games online but also addressing the concerns of game retailers. This dual approach ensures that physical stores remain relevant while gradually shifting consumer behavior towards digital purchases.
For instance, the PSP Go, which was launched in 2009, faced criticism for its digital-only approach. Many gamers and retailers were not ready for such a drastic shift, leading to disappointing sales. Learning from this, Sony’s strategy with the PS Vita seems more balanced, providing options for both digital and physical game purchases.
Benefits for Gamers
The 10% discount on digital games is a welcome change for gamers who prefer the convenience of downloading their games directly to their consoles. This not only saves them money but also eliminates the need to visit a store or wait for a physical copy to be delivered. Additionally, digital games are less likely to be lost or damaged compared to their physical counterparts.
Moreover, Sony’s decision to offer the same discount on game codes purchased from retail stores is a smart move. It ensures that gamers who prefer to buy from physical stores can still benefit from the discount, thus maintaining a good relationship with retailers. This approach also caters to gamers who may not have access to a reliable internet connection for downloading large game files.
Sony hasn’t revealed as yet whether the new discounts will be made available in Europe, but let’s hope so. When more information about their new game prices is revealed we will as always keep you updated.
