Pebble Locker, the third-party Android application created by Luke Korth, has received a new update this week, which has brought with it support for devices running Google’s new Android Wear operating system.
The Pebble Locker application has been designed to make use of the device admin API to control your smartphone’s lock screen. This functionality allows you to use your Android smartphone and now Android Wear devices without the need to disable your phone lock screen when your selected Bluetooth device is within range.
Enhanced Security and Convenience
The Pebble Locker app is also capable of using your wireless networks to carry out the unlock procedure on your smartphone, re-locking your smartphone when you walk away from it. This means that when your Pebble, other Bluetooth devices, or Wi-Fi networks disconnect, your phone will automatically lock itself, enhancing both security and convenience. This feature is particularly useful in environments where you frequently move in and out of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range, such as at home or in the office.
However, it’s important to note that the Pebble Locker app only supports Bluetooth and Android Wear devices that maintain a constant connection to your smartphone and are revealed in your list of paired devices. It does not currently support Bluetooth low energy devices such as Fitbits or similar. This limitation is due to the nature of Bluetooth low energy devices, which are designed to conserve battery life by not maintaining a constant connection.
Practical Applications and User Scenarios
Imagine you are at home, and your phone is connected to your home Wi-Fi network. With Pebble Locker, your phone remains unlocked as long as it stays connected to the Wi-Fi. The moment you step out of your house and lose the Wi-Fi connection, your phone automatically locks itself. This ensures that even if you forget to manually lock your phone, it remains secure.
Similarly, if you are using an Android Wear device, such as a smartwatch, Pebble Locker can keep your phone unlocked as long as the smartwatch is within Bluetooth range. This is particularly useful for people who frequently use their phones for quick tasks and don’t want the hassle of constantly unlocking their device.
