Pandora, the streaming Internet radio service, has this week announced that it will be expanding its collection by adding a new Comedy Genome Project to its library. This exciting addition will include great comedy acts such as Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, Cheech & Chong, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, Joan Rivers, Richard Pryor, and Mitch Hedberg.
Pandora founder Tim Westergren explained that comedy clips have been one of the most requested additions from Pandora listeners. He said that Pandora has taken the same approach to comedy as it has to music, ensuring a curated and enjoyable experience for its users.
How the Comedy Genome Project Works
The Comedy Genome Project will follow the model of Pandora’s Music Genome Project, linking comedians based upon material and presentation, using over 100 common traits. This innovative approach allows users to discover new comedians and sketches that align with their sense of humor. The first selection will include 10,000 sketches from more than 700 different comics and will continue to be added.
The Comedy Genome Project categorizes comedy based on various attributes such as comedic style, subject matter, delivery, and audience reaction. For example, if you enjoy the observational humor of Jerry Seinfeld, the system might recommend similar comedians who excel in observational comedy. This method ensures that listeners are constantly exposed to new and relevant content that matches their preferences.
Expanding the Comedy Library
Pandora’s commitment to expanding its comedy library is evident in its continuous efforts to add new content. The initial launch includes a diverse range of comedians, from classic legends like Richard Pryor and George Carlin to contemporary stars like Chris Rock and Mitch Hedberg. This extensive collection ensures that there is something for everyone, regardless of their comedic taste.
Moreover, Pandora plans to regularly update the Comedy Genome Project with new material, ensuring that listeners always have fresh content to enjoy. This ongoing expansion will include up-and-coming comedians, providing a platform for new talent to reach a wider audience.
In addition to individual sketches, Pandora’s comedy library will feature full-length comedy albums and special performances. This comprehensive approach allows users to enjoy a wide variety of comedic content, from short clips to extended sets.
The Comedy Genome Project is not just about providing laughs; it also aims to celebrate the art of comedy and its impact on culture. By offering a diverse range of comedic styles and voices, Pandora hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for the craft of comedy.
Listeners can create personalized comedy stations, similar to how they create music stations on Pandora. By selecting a favorite comedian or comedy style, users can enjoy a tailored listening experience that evolves based on their feedback. This interactive approach ensures that each user’s comedy station is unique and continually refined to match their tastes.
