A new music video has been created by Ok Go in partnership with Chevrolet, that uses a car to play over a 1,000 instruments during a high-speed drive along a desert road.
To create the innovative music video, a Chevy Sonic car was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms, which can be controlled to play the instruments as the car drives along. The band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instruments with the car. Check it out after the jump to see the very unique music video in motion.
The Making of the Video
The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting to record. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they’d play the right note no matter where they were struck. The meticulous planning involved mapping out the desert road and strategically placing over 1,000 instruments, including pianos, guitars, and even homemade instruments, to ensure they could be played by the car’s pneumatic arms.
The band members had to synchronize their movements and vocals with the car’s speed and the timing of the instruments being struck. This required not only musical talent but also precise coordination and timing. The result is a seamless blend of music and motion, showcasing the band’s creativity and technical prowess.
Behind the Scenes
For those interested in the technical aspects and the challenges faced during the production, you can view more information and behind-the-scenes footage on the Ok Go website. The behind-the-scenes footage reveals the complexity of the setup, including the engineering of the pneumatic arms and the tuning of the instruments. It also highlights the dedication and effort of the entire team, from the band members to the engineers and crew.
The video is not just a musical performance but a feat of engineering and creativity. It pushes the boundaries of what is possible in a music video, combining elements of music, technology, and art. The collaboration with Chevrolet also demonstrates how brands can work with artists to create innovative and engaging content.
The video has garnered millions of views and has been praised for its originality and execution. It stands as a testament to Ok Go’s reputation for creating visually stunning and conceptually unique music videos. From their treadmill choreography in “Here It Goes Again” to the Rube Goldberg machine in “This Too Shall Pass,” Ok Go continues to push the envelope and redefine what a music video can be.
The Ok Go and Chevrolet collaboration for the “Needing/Getting” music video is a remarkable achievement that blends music, technology, and creativity. It showcases the potential of innovative thinking and the power of collaboration, leaving a lasting impression on viewers and setting a new standard for music videos.
