We have featured quite a few different Nixie clocks here on Geeky Gadgets, but the latest one, designed by Daniel Kurth, is definitely the coolest so far: the Nixie Concrete Clock.
The Nixie Concrete Clock features 6 vintage Z560M Nixie tubes, encased in concrete. Very cool, I think it looks amazing.
Unique Design and Functionality
Unlike other clocks that make use of Nixie tubes, this one does not read like a traditional display. Kurth experienced that clocks – regardless of their aesthetic value – sometimes form a disturbing factor in one’s house, since being constantly reminded of the time can be stressful. By rearranging the display, one can enjoy the playful interaction between the 6 different tubes without realizing straight away what time it is. A short focus will, however, allow you to use it as a ‘normal’ clock. The time in the picture reads 10:23:54.
The use of concrete as a casing material is particularly interesting. Concrete is not typically associated with electronics or timepieces, which makes this clock stand out even more. The raw, industrial look of the concrete contrasts beautifully with the warm, vintage glow of the Nixie tubes, creating a piece that is both modern and nostalgic.
The Appeal of Nixie Tubes
Nixie tubes have a long history dating back to the mid-20th century. Originally used in scientific and industrial equipment, they have found a new life in the world of retro and steampunk design. The Z560M Nixie tubes used in this clock are vintage components that add an authentic touch to the design. Each tube contains a series of cathodes shaped like numerals, which light up to display the time.
The appeal of Nixie tubes lies in their unique aesthetic. Unlike modern LED or LCD displays, Nixie tubes have a warm, orange glow that is both eye-catching and soothing. They offer a tactile, almost organic feel that is missing from more contemporary display technologies. This makes them a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the blend of old and new.

Unfortunately, it is only a prototype at the moment, so you won’t be able to get your hands on one just yet. However, the interest it has generated suggests that there could be a market for such unique timepieces. If you’re a fan of Nixie tubes or innovative design, this is definitely a clock to keep an eye on.
