Yahoo has this week unveiled a new redesigned Yahoo Messenger application which it hopes will take on the likes of Facebook’s messenger service and help rekindle the dwindling Yahoo business.
Yahoo has today launched a new Messenger platform that is now available on smartphones, via the web, and as a desktop client. The new platform is now smarter, faster, and even easier to use, says Yahoo.
Features and Improvements
The redesigned Yahoo Messenger aims to combine the best of both worlds by offering high-quality image sharing without compromising on speed. This is a significant improvement over other messaging apps that often force users to choose between image quality and transfer speed. For instance, iMessage opts to send high-resolution photos, but this can take a considerable amount of time. On the other hand, WhatsApp downgrades image quality to ensure faster delivery. Yahoo Messenger’s new approach eliminates this dilemma, providing users with both high-quality images and rapid transfer times.
Austin Shoemaker, senior director of product management for Yahoo Messenger, explains a little more about the inspiration behind the new app.
In most messaging apps, you have to decide between quality or speed. With iMessage, for example, it opts to send you a high-res photo, but it takes awhile to do so. In contrast, WhatsApp downgrades images in order to send them quicker. But we thought: Why not have both?
Additional Features and User Experience
The new Yahoo Messenger also introduces several other features designed to enhance user experience. One of the standout features is the ability to unsend messages. This allows users to retract messages that were sent by mistake, providing an extra layer of control and privacy. Additionally, the app supports GIFs, enabling users to express themselves more creatively and dynamically in their conversations.
Another notable feature is the integration with Flickr, Yahoo’s photo-sharing service. This allows users to access and share their Flickr photos directly within the Messenger app, making it easier to share memories and moments with friends and family. The app also includes a smart contacts feature that suggests people you might want to connect with based on your email and phone contacts.
Yahoo Messenger’s desktop client is designed to offer a seamless experience across devices. Whether you’re using the app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer, your conversations and media are synchronized, ensuring you can pick up right where you left off, no matter which device you’re using.
