Apple recently launched their new Apple TV, which is already up for pre-order and will start shipping at the end of September. Now, some information has appeared that may see the Apple TV launch with Apple’s iOS.
A tip received by the unofficial Apple weblog TUAW from an iPhone developer has revealed a configuration descriptor ‘iProd’ in the system. While the new Apple TV isn’t running the iPhone’s central Springboard application, it’s very possible that the Apple TV will now be jailbreakable since it is an iOS device after all.
Due to the streaming nature of the New Apple TV and lack of internal storage, hackers may be able to jailbreak the device but may have problems running apps directly on the system. However, this may be possible via a USB drive connected to the Apple TV.
Potential for Jailbreaking
When the new Apple TV is shipped in late September for $99, it will be interesting to see just how long it takes the hacker community to jailbreak. The potential for jailbreaking opens up a myriad of possibilities for users who want to customize their Apple TV experience beyond the standard offerings. Jailbreaking could allow for the installation of third-party applications, custom themes, and even the ability to run different media formats that are not natively supported by Apple.
The hacker community has a history of quickly finding ways to jailbreak new Apple devices, and the Apple TV is expected to be no different. Given that it runs on iOS, many of the techniques used to jailbreak iPhones and iPads could potentially be adapted for the Apple TV. This could lead to a surge in new applications and functionalities that were previously unavailable on the platform.
Implications for Developers and Users
For developers, the ability to jailbreak the Apple TV could open up new avenues for app development. They could create applications specifically designed for the larger screen and unique interface of the Apple TV. This could include everything from games to productivity apps, providing a richer and more diverse ecosystem for users.
For users, a jailbroken Apple TV could mean more control over their media consumption. They could install media center applications like Kodi, which supports a wide range of media formats and offers extensive customization options. This would make the Apple TV a more versatile and powerful media hub, capable of meeting a wider range of user needs.
However, it’s important to note that jailbreaking comes with its own set of risks. It can void the warranty of the device and may lead to stability and security issues. Users who choose to jailbreak their Apple TV should be aware of these potential downsides and proceed with caution.
