The Plot and Its Intricacies
What starts out as a lavish train ride through Europe quickly unfolds into one of the most stylish, suspenseful, and thrilling mysteries ever told. From the novel by best-selling author Agatha Christie, “Murder on the Orient Express” tells the tale of thirteen strangers stranded on a train, where everyone’s a suspect. One man must race against time to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again.
The story is set in the 1930s and revolves around the luxurious Orient Express train journey from Istanbul to Calais. The tranquility of the journey is shattered when a wealthy American passenger, Samuel Ratchett (played by Johnny Depp), is found murdered in his compartment. With the train stuck in a snowdrift and no one able to leave, Poirot must navigate a web of lies and deceit to uncover the murderer among the eclectic group of passengers.
Star-Studded Cast and Their Roles
The film boasts a star-studded cast, each bringing their unique flair to the classic characters. Kenneth Branagh not only directs but also takes on the role of Hercule Poirot, the meticulous and brilliant Belgian detective. Penélope Cruz plays Pilar Estravados, a missionary with a mysterious past. Willem Dafoe portrays Gerhard Hardman, a stern and secretive professor. Judi Dench is cast as Princess Dragomiroff, an aristocratic Russian with a regal demeanor.
Johnny Depp’s character, Samuel Ratchett, is a shady businessman with a dark history, making him a central figure in the mystery. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Mrs. Hubbard, a talkative American widow with a keen eye for detail. Daisy Ridley takes on the role of Mary Debenham, a governess with a hidden agenda, while Josh Gad plays Hector MacQueen, Ratchett’s nervous and loyal secretary.
The film also features Leslie Odom, Jr. as Dr. Arbuthnot, a composed and intelligent doctor, and Derek Jacobi as Edward Masterman, Ratchett’s butler who harbors secrets of his own. Olivia Colman plays Hildegarde Schmidt, Princess Dragomiroff’s maid, adding another layer of intrigue to the story.
The film’s production design and cinematography aim to capture the opulence and elegance of the 1930s, with the train itself becoming a character in the story. The confined space of the train adds to the tension and suspense, making every interaction between the characters crucial to solving the mystery.
Murder on the Orient Express promises to be a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating film that pays homage to Agatha Christie’s timeless novel while bringing a fresh perspective to the story. With its release on November 10th, 2017, audiences can look forward to a thrilling cinematic experience that will keep them on the edge of their seats.
