Researchers at Microsoft are testing out a new underwater data center, the company has developed a self contained data center that is capable of working at hundreds of feet below the surface of the sea.
Data centers produce a lot of heat and they need air conditioning to keep everything cool, the idea is that the sea will be used to keep the underwater data center cool.
Microsoft is also looking into using the ocean to power their data center, either by using a turbine of tidal energy.
Microsoft started Project Natick back in 2014 and then started testing their first prototype in August of last year and ran their underwater data center for 105 days.
If the project it successful it could reduce costs involved with data centers in terms of the power used by them and also the way the energy is generated to be used in the data center.
It certainly sounds like and interesting project, you can find out more details about Microsoft’s project to put it data centers under the sea at the link below.
