Microsoft released their OneNote app for Google’s Android Wear platform last month, and now the company has released a new keyboard application for Android Wear devices.
The Android Wear keyboard app from Microsoft is called the ‘Analog Keyboard’. The software is a prototype at the moment, although you can download it for your device.
Features of the Analog Keyboard
The Analog Keyboard app is designed to bring a new way of text input to Android Wear devices. Unlike traditional keyboards that rely on tapping tiny keys, the Analog Keyboard allows users to write letters directly on the smartwatch display. This handwriting recognition feature aims to make text input more intuitive and accessible, especially on small screens where typing can be cumbersome.
The video below shows how the Microsoft Analog Keyboard app works on Android Wear devices, and we can see it in action on a Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch.
As you can see from the video, the Analog Keyboard app allows you to enter text by writing letters on the display of the Moto 360. It certainly looks interesting from the video.
Installation and Compatibility
To get started with the Analog Keyboard, you need to download the app from Microsoft Research. The installation process is straightforward, but it does require a few steps. First, you need to enable the installation of apps from unknown sources on your Android Wear device. Then, you can transfer the app file to your smartwatch and install it.
The Analog Keyboard is compatible with a range of Android Wear devices, not just the Moto 360. This includes popular models like the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live. However, since the app is still in the prototype stage, it may not be as polished as other keyboard apps available on the market.
Potential Use Cases and Future Development
The Analog Keyboard could be particularly useful in scenarios where voice input is not feasible. For instance, in noisy environments or situations where privacy is a concern, handwriting recognition offers a discreet and effective alternative. Additionally, the app could be beneficial for users who are more comfortable with handwriting than typing on small screens.
Microsoft’s foray into Android Wear with the Analog Keyboard is a testament to the company’s commitment to cross-platform compatibility and innovation. While the app is still in its early stages, it has the potential to evolve into a robust tool for smartwatch users. Future updates could bring improvements in handwriting recognition accuracy, support for more languages, and additional features like predictive text and gesture controls.
