EA has today confirmed suspicions that the older Mass Effect 2 game saves that are currently stored in the new Xbox Live Cloud game save area will not work with the new Mass Effect 3 game.
However, don’t despair. There is a way you can circumvent the glitch to still play with your older Mass Effect 2 game saves and continue your character, if you can still access the system you played the game on.
Simply log back in to the console on which you originally saved your Mass Effect 2 game and create a local copy of the save file rather than using the Cloud feature. Unfortunately, if you can’t access the console you originally saved the game from, then you are out of luck, says EA. EA explains a little more about the glitch with Cloud Saves and Mass Effect 3.
“While Mass Effect 3 supports cloud saving for new or successfully imported Mass Effect 2 saves, it does not support the importation of endgame saves directly from the cloud. Additionally, this can cause it to not recognize save files that have been transferred via cloud to a console other than the one where they originated,”
Understanding the Cloud Save Glitch
The issue arises because the cloud save system on Xbox Live was designed to provide convenience and flexibility, allowing gamers to access their saved games from any console. However, the system has limitations when it comes to compatibility between different game versions. In the case of Mass Effect 3, the game is unable to recognize endgame saves from Mass Effect 2 if they are stored in the cloud. This is primarily due to the way the save files are structured and the specific data they contain, which may not be fully compatible with the newer game’s requirements.
For players who have invested significant time and effort into their Mass Effect 2 characters, this can be a frustrating experience. The inability to import these saves means that players might have to start over or miss out on the continuity of their character’s story arc, which is a key feature of the Mass Effect series.
Steps to Work Around the Glitch
To avoid losing your progress, follow these steps:
1. Access the Original Console: Ensure you have access to the console where you originally played and saved Mass Effect 2.
2. Create a Local Copy: Log in to your profile on the original console and navigate to the save files. Create a local copy of your Mass Effect 2 save file.
3. Transfer the Save File: Once you have a local copy, you can transfer it to Mass Effect 3 on the same console. This should allow the game to recognize and import your save file correctly.
It’s important to note that this workaround is only possible if you still have access to the original console. If the console is no longer available, you may need to explore other options, such as starting a new game or seeking assistance from EA support.
The Mass Effect series is renowned for its deep storytelling and character development, and the ability to carry over decisions and progress from one game to the next is a significant part of the experience. While the cloud save glitch is an unfortunate setback, understanding the issue and knowing how to work around it can help players continue their journey without losing their hard-earned progress.
