Apple will allow third party accessory makers to make certified made for Apple Watch accessories as the company has announced the launch of a new third party Made for Apple Watch program.
Apple has set out a range of guidelines for accessory makers for the Apple Watch to make straps for the device.
The guidelines only cover the lugs of the Apple Watch and not the diagnostic port on the side of the device, and it looks like certified bands can not be used to charge the Apple Watch.
Apple Watch bands are easily changed with simple release buttons and lugs that secure the band to the Apple Watch case. When creating your custom bands, refer to the band design guidelines and lug profile. Apple Watch lugs will be available soon through the Made for Apple Watch program.
There are a number of companies who are in the process of making watch bands for the Apple Watch that can also be used to charge the device, a few of these have appeared on Kickstarter, although it looks like these accessories will not get certification from Apple.
