It seems that the flagship LG UltraFine 5K monitor, which has been adopted by Apple as their go-to monitor, is suffering from a critical flaw that makes it intolerant to electromagnetic interference from devices such as a home wireless router.
It appears that in its rush to fulfill Apple orders, LG has simply forgotten to provide adequate EM (electromagnetic) shielding within the 5K monitor to protect it from electromagnetic interference when placed closer to a wireless router.
Understanding Electromagnetic Interference
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a disturbance generated by an external source that affects an electrical circuit by electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, or conduction. This interference can degrade the performance of the circuit or even stop it from functioning. In the case of the LG UltraFine 5K monitor, the interference starts happening when a wireless router is moved within 2 meters of the monitor, causing the screen to flicker and even blank out in extreme situations. This is particularly problematic for users who have limited space and need to place their router and monitor in close proximity.
As you would expect, LG has advised customers to move wireless routers at least 2 meters away from the monitor. However, this is not always a practical solution for everyone. Many users have their workspaces set up in a way that does not allow for such a distance between devices. This has led to significant frustration among users who have invested in what they believed to be a top-of-the-line monitor.
Potential Solutions and Future Updates
As soon as LG releases information for a more adequate solution, we will keep you up-to-date as always. In the meantime, users are left to find their own workarounds. Some have suggested using EMI shielding materials or placing the monitor in a different location altogether. However, these are not ideal solutions and can be cumbersome.
The issue has also raised questions about the quality control processes at LG. How did such a significant flaw make it through the design and manufacturing stages? It seems that in the rush to meet Apple’s demands, some critical steps may have been overlooked. This serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough testing and quality assurance, especially for high-end products.
