As well as announcing the availability of their new limited edition Blade Runner external 4TB hard disk drive designed by Philippe Starck, LaCie has also unveiled their massive 20TB storage devices in the form of the LaCie 5big.
The LaCie 5big builds on the technology from the 2big LaCie storage devices but offers an impressive 20TB of storage starting at $1,200 directly from the LaCie website.
The LaCie 5big features speeds up to 785MB/s thanks to five 7200rpm/64MB cache hard disks preconfigured in RAID 0, within the 5big. The five hot swappable 5big disks enable users to customize their RAID configurations, to create lightning-fast volume with three disks in RAID 0 and a safe volume with two disks in RAID 1 if desired.
Advanced RAID Configurations
The flexibility of the LaCie 5big’s RAID configurations is one of its standout features. RAID 0, known for its speed, stripes data across multiple disks, allowing for faster read and write speeds. This makes it ideal for tasks that require high performance, such as video editing and large-scale data processing. On the other hand, RAID 1 mirrors data across two disks, providing redundancy and ensuring data safety in case of a disk failure. This dual approach allows users to balance between speed and data security based on their specific needs.
“Use the fast volume with Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere or Aperture, and the safe volume to back up projects. The LaCie 5big allows video professionals to move from a heavy desktop workstation to a versatile laptop setup with fast and massive external storage. Their desktop setup stays in the office while the laptop goes on business trips. Plus, with dual Thunderbolt ports, the user can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt peripherals together.”
Thunderbolt Connectivity
The inclusion of dual Thunderbolt ports is another significant advantage of the LaCie 5big. Thunderbolt technology offers high-speed data transfer rates, which are essential for handling large files quickly and efficiently. With the ability to daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt peripherals, users can create a streamlined and efficient workflow. This is particularly beneficial for creative professionals who often work with multiple high-resolution video files and need to transfer large amounts of data without bottlenecks.
For example, a video editor working on a 4K project can connect the LaCie 5big to their laptop via Thunderbolt, ensuring that they can access and edit their files in real-time without any lag. Additionally, the ability to daisy chain other Thunderbolt devices, such as additional storage drives or monitors, means that users can expand their setup as needed without sacrificing performance.
Practical Applications
The LaCie 5big is not just for video professionals; it has a wide range of applications across different industries. For instance, photographers dealing with high-resolution RAW images can benefit from the fast data transfer speeds and large storage capacity. Similarly, businesses that require secure and reliable data backup solutions can use the RAID 1 configuration to ensure their critical data is protected.
Moreover, the LaCie 5big’s design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, making it a suitable addition to any professional workspace. Its robust build quality ensures durability, while its sleek design complements modern office setups.
The LaCie 5big offers a versatile and powerful storage solution for a variety of professional needs. Its combination of high-speed performance, flexible RAID configurations, and Thunderbolt connectivity makes it an excellent choice for anyone requiring reliable and efficient data storage. Whether you’re a video editor, photographer, or business professional, the LaCie 5big provides the tools you need to manage your data effectively.
