Amazon has today rolled out a new update for its iOS Kindle application which brings with it a wealth of new features and enhancements for blind and visually impaired customers.
The new features and enhancements within the Kindle iOS update have been added to enable users to navigate Kindle libraries, read and interact with their books with ease.
Enhanced Accessibility Features
The new Kindle iOS update is available from today and Amazon says that accessibility enhancements will be available on additional platforms in the future. Dorothy Nicholls, Vice President, Amazon Kindle explained a little more in today’s press release:
“We’re excited to introduce these new features to our Kindle for iOS app, making it easier than ever for our blind and visually impaired customers to access the vast selection of over 1.8 million books in the Kindle Store on their iPhone or iPad,”-“With this update, we’re also making customer-favorite features-such as X-Ray, End Actions, sharing, highlighting and bookmarking-more accessible. We look forward to continuing to develop and extend our accessibility features on Kindle Fire and our other Kindle apps.”
The update includes VoiceOver support, which allows visually impaired users to have the text read aloud to them. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who rely on auditory feedback to consume written content. Additionally, the update introduces new navigation tools that make it easier for users to move through their Kindle libraries and books. These tools include improved search functions and the ability to jump to specific chapters or sections with ease.
Additional Features and Future Enhancements
Amazon has also made significant improvements to the app’s user interface to make it more intuitive and user-friendly. For example, the new update includes larger touch targets and simplified menus, which make it easier for users with motor impairments to interact with the app. The update also supports dynamic type, allowing users to adjust the text size to their preference, making reading more comfortable for those with visual impairments.
Moreover, Amazon has committed to extending these accessibility features to other platforms in the future. This means that users of Kindle Fire and other Kindle apps can look forward to similar enhancements, ensuring that all customers, regardless of their device, can enjoy a seamless reading experience.
The update also includes enhancements to popular features such as X-Ray, which provides additional context and information about the book’s content, and End Actions, which offer recommendations for what to read next. These features are now more accessible, allowing visually impaired users to take full advantage of them.
Amazon’s commitment to accessibility is evident in this latest update, and it reflects the company’s broader mission to make reading accessible to everyone. By continuously improving the Kindle app and extending these features to other platforms, Amazon is ensuring that all customers, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the vast selection of books available in the Kindle Store.
