Janztec has this week launched a new mini PC based on the awesome Raspberry Pi 2 single board computer, to which they have added a number of handy extra ports and connections.
Enhanced Connectivity and Industrial Applications
The additional connections take the form of a 24-pin expansion connector with CAN, RS232/485, and industrial I/O with all drivers for the CAN and RS232/485 interfaces supplied. These interfaces are crucial for industrial applications where robust and reliable communication protocols are required. The CAN (Controller Area Network) interface is particularly useful in automotive and industrial environments for real-time data exchange between microcontrollers. RS232/485 interfaces are widely used for serial communication in various industrial equipment, making the Janztec mini PC highly versatile.
The mini PC is also equipped with a battery-backed real-time clock, ensuring that time-sensitive applications can maintain accurate timekeeping even during power outages. This feature is essential for logging events, scheduling tasks, and maintaining system integrity in industrial settings.
Software Support and Additional Features
Supporting the CODESYS soft-PLC runtime control system software, the Janztec mini PC can be used for programmable logic controller (PLC) applications. CODESYS is a widely adopted platform in industrial automation, allowing users to develop and execute control programs. This makes the mini PC an excellent choice for automation engineers looking to deploy cost-effective and scalable control solutions.
A serial debug console port is also available, providing developers with a valuable tool for troubleshooting and debugging their applications. This port allows for direct communication with the system, making it easier to diagnose issues and optimize performance.
In addition to these features, the mini PC offers access to USB ports, Ethernet, and an SD card slot. The USB ports can be used to connect various peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and external storage devices. The Ethernet port provides reliable network connectivity, essential for remote monitoring and control in industrial environments. The SD card slot allows for easy storage expansion and data transfer, making it convenient to update software or back up important data.
The Janztec emPC-A/RPI mini PC is now available in the US for $309, or $364 with a 16GB microSD card preloaded with Raspbian. Raspbian is the official operating system for Raspberry Pi devices, offering a user-friendly interface and a wide range of pre-installed software. This makes it easy for users to get started with their projects right out of the box.
