If have seen any interviews with the astronauts based on the International Space Station or ISS you will already know that their food is rationed and distributed in vacuum packed pouches.
One drink missing from the astronauts menu is a good old steaming espresso coffee and coffee merchant Lavazza,has been working closely with engineering company Argotec to create an espresso coffee machine designed for space called the ISSpresso. Argotec the developers of the ISSpresso which is still currently being put the final stages of testing explain a little more :
“The plastic tube carrying the water inside a normal espresso machine has been replaced with a special steel tube designed to withstand pressure of more than 400 bar.
The machine is so complex that it weighs about 20 kilograms since there are back-ups of all the critical components for safety reasons in accordance with the specifications agreed upon with the Italian Space Agency.”
Once the ISSpresso space coffee machine is installed on the International Space Station visiting astronauts will be create both espresso and caffe lungo drinks, as well as being able to create other hot drinks including tea, infusions and broth on demand.
