Apple support forums are showing that a number of iOS users have been experiencing a few problems with iWork documents being deleted when used with Apple’s new iCloud backup service.
Documents created with Pages, Numbers, or Keynote are apparently disappearing when a fresh sync is carried out, leaving no way to recover the documents. The problem only seems to affect iWorks documents and not other data synced with iCloud.
Understanding the Issue
Some desktop users have reported recovering their work from the folder, which is found in the hidden (in Lion) user Library under the name “Mobile Documents” and/or “Mobile Documents.delete.(date)”. This workaround, however, is not always reliable and may not be accessible to all users, especially those who are not familiar with navigating hidden system folders.
The issue appears to be related to the way iCloud handles the synchronization of iWork documents. When a sync is initiated, iCloud may mistakenly identify some documents as outdated or redundant and subsequently delete them. This can be particularly problematic for users who rely heavily on iWork for their professional or personal projects.
Potential Solutions and Precautions
To mitigate the risk of losing important documents, users can take several precautions. One effective method is to regularly back up iWork documents manually to an external hard drive or another cloud service. This ensures that even if iCloud fails, there is still a copy of the documents available.
Another potential solution is to disable automatic syncing for iWork documents and instead opt for manual syncing. This gives users more control over when and how their documents are synchronized, reducing the likelihood of accidental deletions.
Additionally, Apple support forums suggest that users experiencing this issue should report it directly to Apple. The more reports Apple receives, the higher the likelihood that they will prioritize a fix for this bug in future updates.
