If you think Photoshop plays a big part in magazine advertising, wait until you see this piece of video processing software in action. MovieReshape is a fantastic piece of software that makes it easy for movie creators to change the look and build of actors on video.
You can easily make someone slimmer or more muscular with the click of a mouse. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action.
The MovieReshaper system allows anyone to easily manipulate “the body shape and proportions of a human actor in arbitrary video footage” by just using sliders in a control panel. Muscular level, breast girth, waist girth… you can even modify the stature of whoever you want by just moving a slider to the right or left.
How MovieReshape Works
MovieReshape leverages advanced algorithms and computer vision techniques to analyze and modify video footage. The software identifies key points on the actor’s body and allows users to adjust these points to change the actor’s appearance. This is done through an intuitive interface where sliders control various aspects of the body shape. For example, if you want to make an actor appear more muscular, you simply adjust the muscular level slider. Similarly, you can alter the waist girth, breast girth, and even the overall stature of the actor.
The software is particularly useful for filmmakers who want to achieve a specific look for their characters without the need for extensive physical training or body doubles. It can also be used in post-production to make last-minute adjustments to an actor’s appearance, ensuring that the final product meets the director’s vision.
Applications and Implications
The potential applications of MovieReshape are vast. In the film industry, it can be used to create more visually appealing characters or to match an actor’s appearance to a specific role. For example, an actor playing a superhero can be made to look more muscular without the need for extensive physical training. Similarly, an actor playing a historical figure can be adjusted to match the known appearance of that figure.
Beyond the film industry, MovieReshape could also be used in advertising, virtual reality, and even social media. Advertisers could use the software to create more appealing models for their campaigns, while virtual reality developers could use it to create more realistic avatars. Social media influencers could use MovieReshape to enhance their appearance in videos, potentially leading to a new wave of digital beauty standards.
However, the software also raises ethical questions. The ability to easily alter an actor’s appearance could lead to unrealistic beauty standards and body image issues. It could also be used to deceive audiences, making it difficult to distinguish between real and altered footage. As with any powerful tool, it is important to use MovieReshape responsibly and consider the potential impact on society.
The MovieReshape software was created by Arjun Jain, Thorsten Thormählen, Hans-Peter Seidel, and Christian Theobalt at the Max Planck Institut Informatik.
