HTC and Apple have been filing lawsuits against each other since last year, Apple looked like they had the upper hand, until now, it would appear that HTC has some new patents to add it its portfolio, and these new patents come courtesy of Google.
Google’s has been pretty quiet in the various cases between Apple and the various Android device manufacturers until they recently purchased Motorola in an attempt to protect their Android OS.
Google has now transferred a total of nine patents to HTC within the last week, four of the patents come from Motorola, three from Openwave Systems Inc and two from Palm Inc, and it would appear that Google acquired these patents over the last year, and they are not related to the purchase of Motorola by Google.
HTC has now filed a new lawsuit against Apple and also a new complaint with the ITC, and these new patents will put HTC in a much better position in its case against Apple than it was previously.
With Google’s recent purchase of Motorola, it now has a wide range of patents to use to defend its Android OS against Apple, and these could be used to protect other manufacturers who are being sued by Apple like Samsung.
We suspect that now Google has thrown its hat into the ring by helping HTC out, Apple will go after Google directly, as well as going after the individual manufacturers, as Apple’s patent infringement claims against the various manufacturers relate to Google’s Android OS.
