Hitachi has been in the storage market for a long time and the company has products that are for consumers and those that are for enterprise users. The latest offering for the company is an enterprise HDD that is the industry’s fastest and most power efficient. The drive is called the Ultrastar C10K600. It will be offered in 600GB, 450GB, and 300GB versions.
The drive promises up to 15% better random performance, 18% faster sequential performance and 22% lower power consumption than competing products. The drives all use a 2.5-inch form factor to take up less space and spin at 10,000 rpm. The drives feature dual 6Gb/s SAS interfaces for faster performance.
The drive needs 5.6W of power during operation and 3.1W when idle. The cache is 64MB for optimized performance and is the largest cache in its class. Hitachi is aiming the new HDDs at enterprise storage, blade servers, and rack mount servers. The drives are shipping now at an undisclosed price. Buyers can also get the drives with a bulk data encryption feature.
