Some of our readers will remember the CoWatch that we featured on the site earlier in the year. The device was created by a company called Chronologics, and they have now announced that they have been acquired by Google.
The team behind the device is now joining Google to work on their Android Wear platform and also develop devices for Google.
We started Chronologics in 2014 as a platform for smart, diverse smartwatches. Today, we’re excited to announce the next phase of our journey — we are joining Google to help grow the portfolio of watches powered by Android Wear. We see strong alignment with Android Wear’s mission and look forward to working with our new colleagues at Google to continue pushing the frontier of wearable technology and smartwatches with Android Wear 2.0 and beyond.
The Evolution of Chronologics
Chronologics was founded in 2014 with the vision of creating a versatile platform for smartwatches. Their flagship product, the CoWatch, was one of the first smartwatches to integrate Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant, setting it apart in a crowded market. The CoWatch offered a unique blend of functionality and style, featuring a high-resolution display, long battery life, and a variety of customizable watch faces. It quickly gained attention for its innovative features and user-friendly interface.
The acquisition by Google marks a significant milestone for Chronologics. By joining forces with Google, the Chronologics team will have access to a broader range of resources and expertise, enabling them to further enhance their technology and expand their reach. This move is expected to accelerate the development of new features and improvements for the Android Wear platform, benefiting users and developers alike.
Impact on Android Wear
The integration of Chronologics into Google’s ecosystem is likely to have a profound impact on the future of Android Wear. With the expertise and experience of the Chronologics team, Google is well-positioned to push the boundaries of what smartwatches can do. The collaboration is expected to bring about several key advancements:
1. Enhanced User Experience: The Chronologics team has a proven track record of creating intuitive and user-friendly interfaces. Their expertise will be invaluable in refining the Android Wear user experience, making it more seamless and enjoyable for users.
2. Innovative Features: Chronologics’ pioneering work with voice assistants, such as integrating Alexa into the CoWatch, suggests that we can expect more innovative features in future Android Wear devices. This could include improved voice recognition, more advanced AI capabilities, and deeper integration with other Google services.
3. Expanded Device Portfolio: With Chronologics on board, Google is likely to expand its portfolio of Android Wear devices. This could mean a wider variety of smartwatches catering to different user preferences and needs, from fitness-focused models to luxury timepieces.
4. Stronger Developer Support: The combined expertise of Google and Chronologics will likely result in better tools and resources for developers. This will encourage the creation of more high-quality apps and watch faces, enriching the Android Wear ecosystem.
