The Flowlab board is trying to take the classic skateboard to the next level. Where a classic skateboard will allow you to carve at 25 degrees, the Flowlab board allows up to 45-degree carves, using 14 wheels rather than the traditional 4.
Developed in 1999 by a couple of San Francisco design students looking for a way to skate down the city’s steep hillsides. Unlike a regular skateboard, the Flowboard has 14 wheels, enabling the rider to make the curving motions of a snowboarder.
Innovative Design and Enhanced Performance
The unique design of the Flowlab board is what sets it apart from traditional skateboards. The 14-wheel configuration is not just a gimmick; it fundamentally changes the riding experience. By allowing up to 45-degree carves, the Flowboard mimics the fluid, sweeping motions of snowboarding or surfing. This makes it an excellent choice for riders looking to bring a new dimension to their skateboarding experience. The increased carve angle allows for sharper turns and more dynamic movements, making it ideal for navigating steep hills and tight corners.
Back in 2005, Kern signed a two-year deal with Bravo Sports, a product marketing company, to try and penetrate the sporting goods side of the market while focusing on the pro channels. However, the partnership did not yield the expected results. The company ended up shelving the product for two years for reasons unknown to Kern. Bravo Sports has also declined to comment on their reasons.
Resurgence and Market Re-entry
Now, with the pact finally expired, Sport Technology has relaunched the Flowboard and resurrected the name Bomb Factory for the company’s skateboard and T-shirt line. This relaunch aims to capture the attention of both new and experienced skateboarders who are looking for something different. The Flowboard’s unique design and enhanced performance capabilities make it a compelling option for those looking to push the boundaries of traditional skateboarding.
Flowboards can be purchased directly from the Flowboard website for around $79. This price point makes it accessible for a wide range of consumers, from casual riders to serious skateboard enthusiasts. The relaunch also includes a line of T-shirts, allowing fans to show their support for this innovative brand.
The Flowboard has garnered attention not just for its unique design but also for the riding experience it offers. Riders have reported that the board feels more stable and offers a smoother ride compared to traditional skateboards. This is particularly beneficial for those who enjoy downhill skating, as the increased stability and carving ability make for a safer and more enjoyable experience.
In addition to its performance benefits, the Flowboard is also a conversation starter. Its distinctive look and the story behind its development make it a standout piece of equipment. Whether you’re a seasoned skateboarder or someone looking to try something new, the Flowboard offers a unique and exciting alternative to traditional skateboards.
