It’s hard to put into words just how stoked we were when the trailer for Modern Warfare 2 hit. Even if it turned out to be a bit of a tangled mess in the plot department, it had heart. Plus, we were just coming off the first Modern Warfare, which to this day is probably only matched by Bioshock in creating narrative exclusively using gameplay. Modern Warfare 3 looks… bigger. Certainly explodier. And better-traveled. But it’s a lot more generic too.
The Evolution of Modern Warfare
At least from where we’re standing, it’s pretty clear Activision wanted to brute force their way through this thing. The voice over is kept to a minimum, as probably will the effort put into the narrative. It’s World War 3, everyone’s fighting everyone in major capitals of the world, plot would probably just get in the way. Although we would absolutely love to be proven wrong.
The first Modern Warfare set a high bar with its gripping storyline and immersive gameplay. It was a game that didn’t just rely on explosive set-pieces but also on a narrative that kept players on the edge of their seats. The sequel, Modern Warfare 2, despite its convoluted plot, managed to maintain that emotional core, making players care about the characters and their fates. This emotional investment is something that seems to be missing from Modern Warfare 3, at least based on the initial trailer.
Gameplay and Visuals
Modern Warfare 3 certainly looks like it will deliver on the action front.
