This retro electric chess set design was created by Brent Blake (pictured below), an American architect, design consultant, and competitive chess player.
The simple yet innovative design uses plug bases, sockets, bulbs, and ceramic elements as its main components. For the chess pieces, transparent, colored, and clear bulbs become the typical pieces. Instead of relying on shape and form, color is the distinguishing factor.
When pieces are captured during play, they are placed in the side sockets which are not powered, thus implying the message ‘lights out for those pieces’. This clever design element adds a unique visual cue to the game, making it not only a strategic battle but also a visually engaging experience.
Design and Functionality
All the bulbs have low wattage (7w for the pawns and 11w for the rest), making it not too hot to the touch for users. This ensures that the chess set is safe and comfortable to use for extended periods. Additionally, there is a dimmer switch to control the brightness of the bulbs for different lighting conditions. This feature allows players to adjust the ambiance according to their preferences, whether they are playing in a brightly lit room or a dimly lit environment.
Exhibition and Reception
The electric light chess set will be showcased during the ‘Big Deal Art Show Party’ at Moses Lake Museum & Art Center in Moses Lake, Washington on August 21st, 2010. If you’re interested and in the area, this is a fantastic opportunity to see this unique piece of functional art in person. The exhibition will provide a platform for art enthusiasts and chess lovers alike to appreciate the blend of design and functionality that Brent Blake has achieved.
This chess set is not just a game; it is a conversation piece that bridges the gap between art and utility. The use of light as a primary design element transforms the traditional chess set into a modern, interactive experience. It challenges the conventional notions of what a chess set should look like and how it should function.
