Using a little Arduino hardware and programming a new CNC printing machine has been created to help bring Batik designs to life. Batik is a fabric decoration technique where wax is applied by hand to cloth that is then dyed, leaving behind beautiful designs and patterns. As you can imagine manually applying the wax is a time-consuming endeavour and requires skill to be properly executed.
To help with the application of wax onto materials maker and developers Olivia De Gouveia and Eugenia Morpurgo have designed a CNC wax application machine which can be used to precisely apply wax to materials ready for the dying process. The machine is programmed to make patterns automatically and is equipped with a temperature -controlled pen which is controlled by an Arduino Mega with a RAMPS 1.4 shield and a gantry style framework. “In theory, the device allows for an infinite printing area, and can be used to draw decorative patterns or even cutting paths for clothing.” Watch the demonstration video below to learn more about the unique Batik CNC machine.
