We have featured a number of robots over the years here on Geeky Gadgets but this very unique Cubli Cube robot that measures 15 × 15 × 15 cm has demonstrates some very unique balancing properties.
The Cubli robot has been designed to jump and balance on one of its corners using reaction wheels that are mounted onto three of it faces and rotate at high velocities. Watch the video after the jump to learn more about the amazing balancing properties of this very unique robot.
The Cubli robot work was designed and created at the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control, ETH Zurich, in Switzerland and was partly funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Its creators explain a little more about the mechanics used in the Cubli robot.
“Once the Cubli has almost reached the corner stand up position, controlled motor torques are applied to make it balance on its corner. In addition to balancing, the motor torques can also be used to achieve a controlled fall such that the Cubli can be commanded to fall in any arbitrary direction. Combining these three abilities — jumping up, balancing, and controlled falling — the Cubli is able to ‘walk’.”
