Cnet Asia has let slip details of the new highly anticipated Canon PowerShot G12 camera, the successor to Canon’s ageing G11.
The specifications on the site that have now been re-written included details of a 10-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, 2.8-inch tilt and swivel screen, manual exposure control, HD video (720p) video recording, and optical image stabilization.

Cnet’s original write-up on Canon’s new camera featured a number of G12 mentions throughout the text, and a full-on specifications chart was captured below:

Enhanced Features and Capabilities
The G12 inherits all of the G11’s specifications such as the tilt and swivel LCD screen. Together with a new high dynamic range (HDR) mode that allows you to take 3 consecutive shots and then combines them into a detail-rich image. This HDR mode is particularly useful for capturing scenes with a wide range of light intensities, such as landscapes at sunrise or sunset. The ability to merge multiple exposures into one image ensures that both the shadows and highlights are well-exposed, providing a more balanced and visually appealing photograph.
Additionally, the G12 includes a front control dial, which makes it easier to adjust settings quickly. This feature is especially beneficial for photographers who need to make rapid changes to their camera settings in dynamic shooting environments. The camera also supports RAW format, giving photographers greater flexibility in post-processing their images. RAW files contain more data than JPEGs, allowing for more extensive adjustments to exposure, color balance, and other parameters without degrading image quality.
Video Capabilities and Image Stabilization
The HD video recording capability at 720p is a significant upgrade from the G11, making the G12 a versatile tool for both photography and videography. This feature is ideal for users who want to capture high-quality videos without carrying a separate camcorder. The optical image stabilization system helps to reduce camera shake, ensuring that both still images and videos are sharp and clear. This is particularly useful when shooting in low light conditions or when using the camera’s zoom function.
Moreover, the G12’s 5x optical zoom lens covers a focal length range equivalent to 28-140mm in 35mm format, making it suitable for a wide variety of shooting scenarios, from wide-angle landscapes to close-up portraits. The lens’s maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the wide end allows for better performance in low light conditions and provides more control over depth of field.
Unfortunately, there are no details on price or availability at the moment. However, given the advanced features and improvements over its predecessor, the G12 is expected to be a popular choice among both amateur and professional photographers.
