Boxee has confirmed that it will be launching the ‘Boxee Box’ to run its popular Boxee software direct to your HDTV.
They have said that the Boxee Box is being made with an undisclosed hardware partner, and mock-ups of the box will be shown off on December the 7th along with details and specifications about the new device.
I am very happy to announce we have signed our first partnership with a CE company. At this point we can not say more about the partner or the specs of the device, but we can tell you we are working closely with them to make sure we deliver a great Boxee experience on it.
What is Boxee?
Boxee is a media center software platform that allows users to stream content from the internet and local storage directly to their television screens. It supports a wide range of media formats and integrates various online services such as Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify. The software is known for its user-friendly interface and robust functionality, making it a popular choice for home entertainment enthusiasts.
The Boxee Box aims to bring all these features into a dedicated hardware device, eliminating the need for a separate computer or media server. This makes it easier for users to access their favorite content without dealing with complicated setups or multiple devices.
Anticipated Features and Specifications
While specific details about the Boxee Box’s hardware are still under wraps, there are several features that users can likely expect based on Boxee’s existing software capabilities:
- High-Definition Streaming: The Boxee Box is expected to support HD streaming, allowing users to enjoy their favorite shows and movies in high quality.
- Wide Format Support: Boxee software is known for its ability to handle a variety of media formats, and the Boxee Box will likely continue this tradition.
- Integrated Online Services: Users can expect seamless integration with popular online services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube.
- Local Media Playback: The device will likely support playback from local storage devices, such as USB drives and network-attached storage (NAS).
- User-Friendly Interface: Boxee’s intuitive interface will make it easy for users to navigate through their media libraries and online content.
It will be interesting to see what hardware the Boxee Box uses, and what features it will have. According to Boxee, it is designed to let users get Boxee content into their living rooms no matter where the content is stored. This means that whether your media is on a local hard drive, a networked computer, or an online service, the Boxee Box will provide a seamless way to access it all.
Potential Impact on the Market
The introduction of the Boxee Box could have a significant impact on the home entertainment market. With the increasing popularity of streaming services and digital media, consumers are looking for convenient ways to access their content. The Boxee Box could fill this need by offering a comprehensive solution that combines the best of online and local media playback.
Moreover, the partnership with a CE company suggests that Boxee is serious about delivering a high-quality product. This could set the Boxee Box apart from other media streaming devices on the market, such as Roku and Apple TV, which have their own strengths but may not offer the same level of versatility and integration.
The Boxee Box represents an exciting development for both Boxee fans and the broader home entertainment market. With its anticipated features and the backing of a reputable hardware partner, the Boxee Box has the potential to become a must-have device for anyone looking to enhance their home media experience.
