The Bluetooth SIG has just announced Bluetooth 4.2, which is designed to bring a number of new features to Bluetooth, including improved privacy.
One of the main new features in Bluetooth 4.2 is designed to protect your privacy from beacons, like Apple’s iBeacon, and a store or retailer will not be able to track you with Bluetooth 4.2, unless you have installed their app and given them permission.
“Bluetooth 4.2 is all about continuing to make Bluetooth Smart the best solution to connect all the technology in your life – from personal sensors to your connected home. In addition to the improvements to the specification itself, a new profile known as IPSP enables IPv6 for Bluetooth, opening entirely new doors for device connectivity,” said Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “Bluetooth Smart is the only technology that can scale with the market, provide developers the flexibility to innovate, and be the foundation for the IoT.”
Bluetooth 4.2 is designed to be faster than the current version, around 2.5 times faster and it also comes with a larger packet capacity of around 10 times over the current version.
