We have seen a number of the new features that will be coming to the iPhone and iPad in iOS 11 and now we have some details on another. Apple is changing the way the Emergency SOS feature works on the iPhone.
When you press the sleep/wake button on the iPhone 5 times in a row, a new Emergency SOS menu is shown, this can be seen in the picture below.
When this is done a new screen is displayed with your Medical ID, and also an Emergency SOS option so that you can make an emergency call. This feature is designed to provide quick access to emergency services and vital medical information, which can be crucial in situations where every second counts.
Disabling TouchID for Enhanced Security
Once the sleep/wake button has been pressed five times, TouchID is then disabled and the only way to unlock the handset is with the passcode. This is a significant security enhancement, as it prevents unauthorized access to your device. For instance, in a situation where you might be compelled to unlock your phone against your will, this feature ensures that your biometric data cannot be used to unlock the device. Instead, only the passcode, which is presumably known only to you, can be used to gain access.
This change reflects Apple’s ongoing commitment to user security and privacy. By making it more difficult for unauthorized individuals to access your phone, Apple is helping to protect sensitive information stored on your device.
Expected Release and Compatibility
Apple has not given an exact release date for iOS 11 as yet. However, we are expecting the software to be released sometime in September, along with the new iPhone 8. This aligns with Apple’s typical release schedule, where new iOS versions are launched alongside new iPhone models.
iOS 11 will be compatible with a range of devices, including the iPhone 5s and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 2 and later, and the 6th generation iPod touch. This broad compatibility ensures that a wide range of users will be able to take advantage of the new features and improvements.
In addition to the Emergency SOS feature, iOS 11 will bring a host of other enhancements. These include a redesigned Control Center, improvements to Siri, augmented reality capabilities through ARKit, and a new Files app for better file management. These updates are designed to make the iOS experience more intuitive, powerful, and versatile.
For example, the redesigned Control Center consolidates all controls into a single page, making it easier to access frequently used settings. Siri’s improvements include a more natural voice and the ability to translate languages, which can be incredibly useful for travelers. ARKit opens up new possibilities for augmented reality applications, allowing developers to create immersive experiences that blend the digital and physical worlds.
The Files app, on the other hand, provides a centralized location for all your files, whether they are stored locally, in iCloud, or in other cloud services like Dropbox. This makes it easier to organize and access your documents, photos, and other files.
Overall, iOS 11 promises to be a significant update that enhances both the functionality and security of iPhones and iPads. The new Emergency SOS feature is just one example of how Apple is continually working to improve the user experience and protect its customers.
