Apple will be releasing their new iOS 12 software later this month and now last year’s iOS 11 has reached 85 percent adoption.
The last time these adoption figures were updated by Apple was back in May when the software was sitting on 81 percent adoption, so it has only increased 4 percent since then.
Challenges with iOS 11 Adoption
The adoption of iOS 11 was slower than that of iOS 10. There were some problems with the OS when it launched which may have put people off. Users reported various issues such as battery drain, app crashes, and performance lags, which contributed to the slower uptake. Additionally, some users were hesitant to upgrade due to concerns about compatibility with older devices and the potential for bugs that often accompany new software releases.
Despite these initial hurdles, Apple worked diligently to address these issues through subsequent updates. By the time iOS 11.3 and iOS 11.4 were released, many of the initial bugs had been fixed, and performance had improved significantly. This gradual improvement likely contributed to the increase in adoption rates over time.
Expectations for iOS 12
The new iOS 12 software is expected to have a higher adoption rate than previous versions of Apple’s mobile OS. This is because the new software is designed to bring speed and performance improvements to existing Apple devices. Apple has focused on optimizing the performance of older devices, which has been a significant concern for many users.
This has been seen in the video tests of the various betas of the software where older devices like the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6S have seen a number of speed improvements over the current release. For example, apps launch faster, the keyboard appears more quickly, and the camera is more responsive. These enhancements make older devices feel more usable and extend their lifespan, which is a significant selling point for users who may not be ready to upgrade to a new device.
In addition to performance improvements, iOS 12 introduces several new features aimed at enhancing user experience. These include Screen Time, which helps users monitor and manage their device usage, and Group FaceTime, which allows for video calls with up to 32 participants. The new Memoji feature, an extension of Animoji, lets users create personalized animated characters that mimic their facial expressions. These features, combined with the performance enhancements, make iOS 12 a compelling upgrade for many users.
Moreover, Apple has made it easier for users to update their devices by streamlining the update process and reducing the amount of free space required for the installation. This has removed some of the barriers that previously prevented users from upgrading to the latest software.
Overall, the anticipation for iOS 12 is high, and it is expected to achieve a faster adoption rate compared to iOS 11. The combination of performance improvements, new features, and a smoother update process positions iOS 12 as a significant upgrade that appeals to a broad range of users.
