Apple has announced its first weekend sales figures for the iPhone 5, Apple has sold over 5 million iPhone 5s since the device went on sale last Friday, which is 1 million more than they sold of the iPhone 4S on the opening weekend last year.
Apple also announced that they have sold out their initial supply of the iPhone 5 and are working to increase the supply of the handset to meet the massive demand.
“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”
A number of analysts were predicting that Apple would end up selling around 8 million iPhone 5s on the opening weekend, although it looks like one of the reasons that Apple only managed to sell 5 million, which is still very impressive was due to the intial stock that they had available for the opening weekend.
