If your apartment or workspace needs a little revamp, you might be interested to learn that after Mozilla’s new office in Japan was designed by Nosinger, the furniture used in the re-design was created with the idea of open source in mind and is now available to download and make yourself.

The Concept of Open Source Furniture
“We designed Mozilla Japan’s new office, MOZILLA FACTORY, based on the idea of Open Source. Mozilla Japan is one of the parts of the Mozilla Foundation which has promoted the idea of open source and open source software.
“Open Source” is a kind of movement to open the source code of software. It enables everyone to be able to use that software and participate in improving it. This movement has made it possible for software to be continually improved, and develop high-quality software on a budget.
This office was constructed using common products, such as corner modules or plastic pallets. Therefore, our design might also be able to call the “open source furniture” so to speak. Because general products were used and all drawings uploaded to the web, it is possible for everyone to make these functional office furniture pieces inexpensively.”
Benefits and Applications of Open Source Furniture
Open source furniture offers numerous benefits, particularly in terms of cost-effectiveness and customization. By using readily available materials and providing detailed plans online, anyone can create high-quality furniture without the need for expensive resources or specialized skills. This democratizes the process of furniture making, allowing individuals and small businesses to furnish their spaces creatively and affordably.
For example, the corner modules and plastic pallets used in Mozilla’s office can be easily sourced from local suppliers or even repurposed from existing materials. This not only reduces costs but also promotes sustainability by encouraging the reuse of materials. Additionally, the open-source nature of the designs means that they can be modified and improved upon by the community, leading to a continuous evolution of the furniture pieces.
Moreover, open source furniture can be particularly beneficial in educational settings. Schools and universities can use these designs to teach students about design, engineering, and sustainability. By building their own furniture, students gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the principles behind the designs.
