World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has announced massive lay-offs, letting about 600 people go. The company says this is the result of shifting “resources” and “overstaffing”. 90% of departing staff is said to be non-development personnel and the World of Warcraft team seems to have remained unaffected.
“In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources,” Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said. “This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.” Nothing out of the ordinary for one of the world’s most profitable, yet turbulent industries.
