The guys over at Engadget have got their hands on a Samsung smartphone which features Microsoft’s [MSFT] new mobile OS, Windows Phone 7.
From the looks of the photos and video, Windows Phone 7 looks pretty impressive, especially the UI and some of the features, although according to Engadget there are a few features they would like to see added to Windows Phone 7.
Windows Phone 7 Features and UI
Windows Phone 7 introduces a fresh and innovative user interface that sets it apart from other mobile operating systems. The UI, known as Metro, is designed to be clean, modern, and highly intuitive. It features live tiles on the home screen that provide real-time updates from apps, making it easy for users to stay informed at a glance. This dynamic approach to app icons is a significant departure from the static icons found on other platforms like iOS and Android.
One of the standout features of Windows Phone 7 is its integration with Microsoft services. Users can seamlessly sync their contacts, emails, and calendars with Microsoft Exchange, making it an excellent choice for business users. Additionally, the OS offers deep integration with Xbox Live, allowing gamers to connect with their Xbox profiles, earn achievements, and even play games that sync with their console experience.
Areas for Improvement
While Windows Phone 7 has a lot to offer, Engadget pointed out a few areas where the OS could improve. For instance, the lack of multitasking support for third-party apps was a significant drawback at the time of its release. Users could not switch between apps without losing their progress, which was a feature already available on competing platforms.
Another area of concern was the limited app ecosystem. Although Microsoft had made efforts to attract developers, the Windows Phone Marketplace had fewer apps compared to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This limitation could be a deciding factor for users who rely heavily on a wide variety of apps for their daily tasks.

However, it faces challenges in terms of multitasking capabilities and app availability. Whether it can compete with established giants like Android and iOS remains to be seen, but it certainly offers a compelling alternative for users looking for something different.
