Bentley recently broke the record for the fastest production car at Pikes Peak with the Bentley Continental GT.
The luxury car maker managed a time of 10:18.488 and had an average speed of 74 miles per hour on the 12.42 mile course and now we have a video from inside the car.
Join driver Rhys Millen (NZ) on board the Bentley Continental GT as a new outright record for production cars is set by 8.4 seconds. A camera mounted to Rhys’ race helmet reveals footage from a driver’s point-of-view as he tackles the 156 corners, climbing almost 5,000ft in 10m18.488s.
The Significance of the Record
Breaking the record at Pikes Peak is no small feat. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, also known as “The Race to the Clouds,” is one of the most challenging motorsport events in the world. The course is notorious for its 156 turns and the significant elevation change, which starts at 9,390 feet and finishes at 14,115 feet above sea level. This elevation change can drastically affect a car’s performance due to the thinning air, making it a true test of both the vehicle and the driver’s capabilities.
The Bentley Continental GT’s achievement is particularly impressive given that it is a production car, meaning it is essentially the same model that consumers can purchase, without extensive modifications. This record showcases the engineering prowess and performance capabilities of Bentley’s vehicles, highlighting their ability to perform under extreme conditions.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The Bentley Continental GT used for this record-breaking run was equipped with a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine, capable of producing 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. This powerhouse enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 207 mph. These specifications are a testament to the car’s incredible performance and engineering.
Moreover, the car’s advanced all-wheel-drive system and adaptive chassis technology played crucial roles in handling the treacherous conditions of the Pikes Peak course. The vehicle’s sophisticated aerodynamics and high-performance braking system also contributed to its success, ensuring stability and control throughout the climb.
The driver, Rhys Millen, is no stranger to Pikes Peak. With multiple records and wins under his belt, Millen’s expertise and familiarity with the course were invaluable. His skillful driving, combined with the Continental GT’s capabilities, resulted in a seamless and record-breaking run.
