Toshiba has pulled the wraps off a new storage device in the form of a incredibly thin hard drive. The hard drive is the and the thin storage device was made specifically for thin laptops. The good news about this product for your average consumer is that it means you’ll be able to get incredibly thin laptops at lower prices because you can opt for this thin hard drive rather than a more expensive SSD, and get more storage space.
Toshiba says that this new drive is its the first two platter 7 mm thick hard drive and the drive is available in up to 1 TB capacity. Toshiba also makes a 750 GB version and both versions have a pair of platters inside. Both versions of the drive also feature four heads and an average seek time of 12ms.
The drive spins 5400 RPM and uses a standard SATA interface. Overall dimensions of the hard drive are 69.85 mm x 100 mm x 7.0 mm in the driveways 99 g. Those compact dimensions give the drive a standard 2.5-inch form factor in a very thin drive capable of fitting inside the latest thin and light notebooks out there. There’s no word on when machines using this new drive might come to market.
