It has been confirmed this week that Tesco is planning to launch a follow-up Android tablet to its popular Hudl tablet that launched in September 2013 throughout the UK and has sold around 500,000 units since launch.
The release of a new Hudl 2 tablet in 2014 has been rumoured for some time, and this week Chief Executive Philip Clarke confirmed via the BBC Radio 5 live’s Wake Up to Money programme that the Hudl 2 tablet will be launching in September 2014.
Features and Expectations for the Hudl 2
The new Tesco Hudl 2 Android tablet will be shipped pre-installed with Tesco services and is expected to be aimed at the lower end of the Android market, similar to the existing Hudl that is priced at £119. The original Hudl was well-received for its affordability and decent performance, making it a popular choice among budget-conscious consumers. The Hudl 2 is anticipated to build on this success by offering improved features while maintaining a competitive price point.
While specific details about the Hudl 2’s hardware specifications have not been disclosed, it is expected that the tablet will feature a better display, enhanced processing power, and possibly more storage options. The original Hudl came with a 7-inch display, a quad-core processor, and 16GB of internal storage, so it would not be surprising to see upgrades in these areas.
Tesco’s Entry into the Smartphone Market
In addition to the Hudl 2 tablet, Tesco is also planning to launch a smartphone before the end of 2014. Unlike the Hudl 2, which targets the budget segment, this new handset is expected to be aimed at the higher end of the smartphone market yet aggressively priced. This move indicates Tesco’s ambition to expand its footprint in the consumer electronics market by offering a range of devices catering to different segments.
The smartphone market is highly competitive, with established players like Apple, Samsung, and Google dominating the high-end segment. Tesco’s strategy to offer a high-end smartphone at a competitive price could attract consumers looking for premium features without the premium price tag. However, the success of this venture will largely depend on the specifications, build quality, and overall user experience of the device.
Unfortunately, no details on the price or hardware specifications for either the new Android Hudl 2 tablet or the newly announced Tesco smartphone have been released as yet. However, given Tesco’s track record with the Hudl tablet, there is a good chance that both devices will offer good value for money.
As soon as more information becomes available, we will keep you updated as always. The anticipation surrounding these new devices is a testament to Tesco’s growing influence in the tech market, and it will be interesting to see how they fare against established competitors.
