Sony has this week unveiled a new line of limited edition DualShock 3 PS3 controllers that will be arriving in Japan in November and be on sale for a limited time. The top of the two controllers pictured below is finished in what Sony are calling an Urban Camo effect and will be arriving on November 17th for 5,500 Yen.
The bottom controller is finished in a beige and brown map decal and will be available from November 2nd for 9,980 Yen. Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t yet revealed whether the new special edition controllers will be made available worldwide as yet but as always if we hear any news we will keep you updated.
Design and Features
The Urban Camo controller is designed to appeal to gamers who enjoy military-themed games or simply prefer a rugged, tactical look. The camouflage pattern is not just for aesthetics; it also provides a unique texture that enhances grip, making it ideal for long gaming sessions. The beige and brown map decal controller, on the other hand, offers a more adventurous and exploratory vibe. This design could be particularly appealing to fans of open-world games and adventure titles, where exploration and navigation are key elements.
Both controllers maintain the classic DualShock 3 features, including the pressure-sensitive buttons, Sixaxis motion sensing technology, and the familiar ergonomic design that has made the DualShock series a favorite among gamers. The limited edition nature of these controllers adds a layer of exclusivity, making them a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts.
Market and Availability
While these controllers are currently announced for the Japanese market, there is significant interest from gamers worldwide. The pricing of 5,500 Yen for the Urban Camo controller and 9,980 Yen for the map decal controller reflects their limited edition status. For context, 5,500 Yen is approximately $50 USD, and 9,980 Yen is around $90 USD, though prices may vary based on exchange rates and import fees.
Sony has a history of releasing region-specific products, and these controllers could follow that trend. However, the global gaming community’s response could influence Sony’s decision to release these controllers in other markets. Collectors and fans outside Japan are already expressing their interest on various gaming forums and social media platforms.
Examples of past limited edition controllers that eventually saw a global release include the “God of War” and “Gran Turismo” themed controllers. These were initially region-specific but were later made available worldwide due to high demand. If the new DualShock 3 controllers follow a similar path, gamers around the world could soon have the opportunity to add these unique designs to their collections.
In addition to their aesthetic appeal, these controllers could also serve as a nostalgic reminder of the PS3 era, especially as the gaming industry continues to evolve with the PS5 and beyond. For many gamers, the DualShock 3 represents countless hours of gameplay and memorable experiences, making these limited edition versions even more special.
