When Samsung launched the Galaxy Nexus in the UK and Europe, the device came with 16GB of built-in storage, and there was also supposed to be a 32GB model on the way.
In the US, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is available with Verizon with 32GB of built-in storage, but the GSM version is only available with 16GB of storage. Now, it would appear that Samsung may have decided not to release a 32GB GSM version.
The news comes from Expansys, who have posted on the XDA developers forum that Samsung has decided to cancel the 32GB version, although Samsung has yet to confirm this.
Another retailer, Negri Electronics, has also confirmed that they have received the same information from Samsung that they will not be releasing a 32GB GSM Galaxy Nexus.
Possible Reasons for Cancellation
It isn’t clear as yet why Samsung has decided to cancel the 32GB model. There could be several reasons behind this decision. One possibility is that Samsung might be facing supply chain issues or production constraints that make it difficult to manufacture the 32GB model in large quantities. Another reason could be related to market demand; perhaps the 16GB model is selling well enough that Samsung doesn’t see the need to introduce a higher-capacity version.
Additionally, the cost of producing a 32GB model might not justify the potential profit margins, especially if the 16GB version is meeting consumer needs. It’s also possible that Samsung is focusing on future models and innovations, diverting resources away from the Galaxy Nexus.
Impact on Consumers
The cancellation of the 32GB GSM Galaxy Nexus could have various implications for consumers. For those who require more storage for apps, photos, videos, and other data, the 16GB model may not suffice. This could lead potential buyers to look at other brands or models that offer higher storage capacities.
However, it’s worth noting that cloud storage solutions have become increasingly popular, allowing users to store their data online rather than on the device itself. Services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive offer ample storage space, which could mitigate the impact of having only 16GB of built-in storage.
