Adafruit has this week unveil a new Raspberry Pi PiTFT 480×320 3.5 inch TFT display and touchscreen they have created that will soon be available to purchase via their online store and other retailers.
The new Raspberry Pi PiTFT is equipped with a 3.5″ display offering a resolution of 480×320 16-bit colour pixels and comes with a resistive touch overlay so is slightly larger than the popular and original PiTFT.
As with the original Raspberry Pi TFT the new PiTFT fits directly on top of the single board mini PC and has been designed to work with either the Raspberry Pi Model A or B but also works perfectly fine with the Model B+. Even though there is a slight overhang on the USB port by 5mm says Adafruit. Adafruit explains a little more :
“The plate uses the high speed SPI interface on the Pi and can use the mini display as a console, X window port, displaying images or video etc. Uses the hardware SPI pins (SCK, MOSI, MISO, CE0, CE1) as well as GPIO #25 and #24.
GPIO #18 can be used to PWM dim the backlight if you like. All other GPIO are unused. There’s a 2×13 header on the bottom, you can connect a standard Pi GPIO cable to it to use any of the other pins ask you like.
We’ve created a custom kernel package based of off Notro’s awesome framebuffer work, so you can install it over your existing Raspbian (or derivative) images in just a few commands.”
Unfortunately no information on pricing or worldwide availability has been released as yet by Adafruit but the company says its “coming soon”, as soon as more information comes to light we will keep you updated as always.
