If you have fancied using Apple’s Airplay streaming system but have not yet brought yourself to part with the roughly $100 price tag of currently available Airplay speakers.
You might be interested in a new tutorial that has been published over on the MAKE website that provides instructions on how to create your own Raspberry Pi powered DIY AirPlay speaker from just $45.
The tutorial shows you how to create your very own Raspberry Pi Airplay receiver that can be attached to a pair of external speakers you may already have transforming them into a wireless Airplay audio system. Watch the three-minute video below for an overview of what hardware and skills you will require to be able to complete this fairly simple project.
The main requirement is a Raspberry Pi minicomputer, but unfortunately model A Pi systems are not supported. Adam Burkepile on the MAKE website explains :
If you’re like me, you’ve toyed with the idea of getting an AirPort Express but the $100 price seemed a bit steep, since all you really wanted to do with it is play audio using AirPlay. You can turn a Raspberry Pi into an AirPlay speaker for around $45. That’s what you’re going to do in this tutorial. By the end of it you’ll have your very own Raspberry Pi AirPlay receiver!
